Usually in good way, but occasionally (more often than we would like) in bad ways. Even with all preparation, sometimes random and unexpected problems happens. In the case of field experiments, the unpredictability is multiplied by two or three!

In the last field work at Serra da Capivara we had a simple primary aim: to give capuchin monkeys some oil palm nuts (Elaeis guineensis) and let them crack those open with stones tools from different origins and materials, to then analyse the wear marks. Simple stuff for capuchin monkeys that use stones for several purposes like the Serra da Capivara population.

As sometimes happen, we did not account for
the resolve of the monkeys. When we presented the nuts, first intact and then already open, the monkeys examined, tasted the kernel, and even cracked open some, but after that, simply ignored the new food….. completely disregard for those oil nuts.

We tried a few more times, but after some other monkeys attempt on tasting the nuts, it was clear to us that those monkeys do not like oil palm nuts. As a field primatologist, I had to try the nuts, and I must agree with the monkeys, those nuts are NOT good. They are bitter, maybe because of the oil. The other palm nuts capuchin monkeys crack and eat (eg. genus Attalea and Syagrus nuts) are very tasty (yes, I ate those as well).

As we could not convince or force the monkeys to crack those nuts open, we choose an alternative plan, and return to São Paulo, hoping to do a modified version of the experiment with another palm nut (Syagrus romanzoffiana) and a group of capuchin monkey that we already knew beforehand processed this resource with stone tools. The group mentioned lives at the Tietê Ecological Park, the first capuchin group that I worked with several years ago.

Capuchin monkey cracking nut

These semi-free ranging capuchins live on an urban park, and they were some of the first non-captive capuchins reported to spontaneous use stone tools.

It is being interesting to work with those monkeys after so many years without visiting them.
